During the 1980s and 1990s, Diana, Princess of Waleswas one of the world’s most glamorous and famousfigures. Her photograph was printed on thousands ofmagazine covers and pictures of her could be seen oncountless television programmers. Millions of peoplearound the world knew of Diana, but few people actuallyknew the real person behind the media image. It is thisreal person rather than the public persona that CherryGilchrist examines. In Princess Diana she pulls aside thecurtains of royal mystery and mystique surrounding Dianaand looks at the inner person, her feelings, attitudes andanxieties. She shows how Diana’s background andupbringing influenced her and how her personality wasformed from the many painful experiences she had toendure as the child of a broken marriage. The effect ofchildhood experience on the adult is an important featureof the text. One of the major themes that the book examines is thequestion of how a princess in the modern world shouldbehave. Diana’s open and informal style is contrasted withthe more rigid traditions of the British royal family. CherryGilchrist illustrates the growing conflict between Diana’sdesire for freedom and a more relaxed approach to lifewith her husband’s conservative sense of what was‘suitable’ for a princess. This theme has a universal application. In manycountries, people in public positions have to balance theirdesire to behave normally with the commonly held beliefthat people in authority should be very dignified andrespectable and rather distant from ordinary life, and thatit is degrading for public figures to act too frivolously orinformally. Similarly, the author describes the intrusion ofthe press into Diana’s private life and raises the questionof the extent to which the public is entitled to know aboutthe personal lives of celebrities. Do public figures have theright to a private life, or is everything they do open topublic inspection? This is an issue which has remained atthe forefront of public debate since Diana’s death. The author is frank about Diana’s disastrous marriage. She describes her illnesses and suicide attempts, theaffairs, and the ultimate bitterness between Diana andCharles. Many little-known facts are exposed and theimportant role of Camilla Parker-Bowles as PrinceCharles’s lover and companion is explained. A key themeis the part her two sons and her charity work played inhelping Diana to form a new role for herself after herdivorce in 1996. Finally, the tragic events of Diana’s deathare recounted. In Princess Diana Cherry Gilchrist shows how easilymarriages can be built on illusions and the terrible costthat has to be paid when these illusions are shattered. Butit is an optimistic tale, for we learn how Diana’s love andkindness and her dedication to her children and charitieshelped to save her from disaster and bring her evengreater respect and fame in death than she had in life. Inher conclusion the author looks at the importance thathelping others and being open can have in achieving afulfilling life, however short that life might be.
